Corrigenda - Mainstream Weekly, May 19, 2018

Sunday 20 May 2018

Ram Puniyani’s article “What is in a name?: Highlighting ‘Ramji’ in Ambedkar’s Name!” in Mainstream (April 14, 2018) contained a serious mistake. The sentence on line 15 in para two on page 4 column one should read: “Dalits have been compared to dogs by V.K. Singh in 2016, and recently by Anant Kumar Hegde, MP, the Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship (who represents the Uttara Kannada constituency of the State in the Lok Sabha), in Karnataka.” We are grateful to Dr Jos Chathukulam, Professor occupying the Ramakrishna Hegde Chair on Decentralisation and Development at the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, for pointing out this error.

Also the last sentence of the second last paragraph of the editorial “Karnataka Polls, Kathua Case, Putin Returns” on page 2 in Mainstream (May 12, 2018) should read: “More difficult would be to fix the economic slowdown and reverse the course of the confrontationist Russian foreign policy with the West (for which it is the latter that must be held squarely responsible).”

And the introductory note on Binoy Viswam at the end of the first column of Viswam’s article “The Congress of Hope and Unity” on page 7 in Mainstream (May 12, 2018) should read: “The author, who has been elected to the Central Secretariat of the CPI at its latest Congress in Kollam, Kerala, is a former Minister of Forest and Housing in the erstwhile LDF Government in Kerala.”

These errors are regretted.         —Editor
