No miracle will ever clean
The memory, bestial and obscene,
Of those who, having fouled their trust,
Grew warped with dread and powerlust—
And ordered fire on the square,
On unarmed people everywhere,
Brave people seeking to be free
Of rottenness, of tyranny.
