Statement on Assault on Women Journalists by Delhi Police | Editors Guild of India (Sept 6, 2026)

September 5, 2026 | New Delhi: The Editors Guild of India (EGi) strongly condemns the detention and alleged assault on journalists Shaheen Khan and Nafisa Khan, working for 4PM News Network, by Delhi Police personnel attached to the Saket Police Station. The two women journalists were covering the inauguration of a new wing at the Max Hospital in Saket, an event which was attended by Home Minister Amit Shah and Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.

The journalists have charged that when they attempted to pose a question to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, they were manhandled and dragged away in a police vehicle to the Saket Police Station. At the Police Station, the duo were beaten up by women police officials. More disturbingly, the police officials present also hurled abuse targeting their religion at the two journalists.

The journalists have displayed video evidence of injury marks on their bodies. In the face of this, the Delhi Police’s denial – that the two were merely removed for blocking access with an improperly parked scooter – fails to carry conviction.

The Guild demands an immediate independent and unbiased probe into the charges, and strict action against erring police staff if the charges are substantiated.
