With the shutdown entering its sixth week, and with no visible end in sight, science is seriously disrupted in USA. The government shutdown will continue until Congress can pass a bill reopening it. U.S. science always suffers during government shutdowns. Funding lapses send government scientists home with no pay. Many experiments in labs are halted as Federal agencies suspend ongoing research, new grant proposals, review panels on hold, and stop collecting and analysing public databases. Recently, I was pained when a research student complained that he is unable to access NCBI, one of the disease gene databases hosted by NIH (National Institute for Health).
